ROAM

Roam is a world-premiere collaboration in music and film between acclaimed concert pianist Clare Hammond and legendary filmmakers the Quay Brothers, renowned for their haunting, surreal animations.

Searching, striving, in flux: as humans, we are continually on the move, whether driven by necessity or the hope of a better future. Centred on Rachmaninov’s impassioned Second Piano Sonata, Roam brings together music by Frédéric Chopin, Dmitri Shostakovich, Sofia Gubaidulina, Grażyna Bacewicz and Nikolai Medtner, exploring how composers have responded to revolution, war and political repression.

Hammond’s live performance unfolds alongside a specially commissioned film from the Quay Brothers, creating an immersive journey through doubt and fear, strength and resolve.

Post-show event

Following the performance, Clare Hammond will be joined by Professor Philip Bullock, Professor of Russian Literature and Music at the University of Oxford, for an illuminating conversation exploring the stories behind the music, its historical and cultural context, and the creative collaboration behind Roam, followed by an audience Q&A.
