Gildas Quartet

Don't just hear Shostakovich's masterpiece - sit inside it.

Experience chamber music from the inside. In the Gildas Quartet's award-winning Surround Sound Sessions, the traditional concert is turned inside out, the musicians surround the audience, placing you at the heart of the quartet as the music unfolds from every direction.

Winner of the Audience Engagement Prize at the 2018 ‘Franz Schubert and Modern Music’ International Chamber Music Competition in Graz, the format was created by the Gildas Quartet to bring audiences closer to the dialogue, textures and energy of playing in a string quartet.

Centred on Dmitri Shostakovich's powerful String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op.110, the session begins with an introduction to the music before a complete live performance.

Written in 1960, it contains striking musical references to Shostakovich's own life and has been interpreted as a reflection on war, loss and oppression. Hearing from within the quartet, brings you closer to both the music and the musicians, revealing the textures, dialogue and drama of one of the twentieth century's most compelling chamber works.
