Songs are at the absolute core of Javanese gamelan music in both popular and classical traditions. This evening’s workshop will introduce participants to the basics of reading gamelan musical notation and singing in Javanese. We will aim to learn two pieces of Javanese music: one a standard classical chorus and the other a song from the large repertoire of popular music from the late 20th century. The Oxford Gamelan Society will provide live accompaniment throughout the rehearsal, a rare opportunity not to be missed.
The workshop will be followed by a short performance giving participants the opportunity to show what they have learned over the last hour.
Part of Oxford Sings, a day-long celebration of singing in its many forms.

The Oxford Gamelan Society is Britain’s longest established Gamelan group and is a friendly community of musicians drawn from across the university and city communities. The society meets regularly to play an heirloom Gamelan, ‘Kyai Madu Laras’ (the ‘Venerable Sweet Harmony’) which was presented to the Bate Collection of Musical instruments in 1985 and which has become the centrepiece of the Bate Collection’s outreach and education programme.
