BBC New Generation Artists: Yibai Chen

BBC New Generation Artist Yibai Chen comes to the Schwarzman Centre for a special performance exploring the theme of planetary health through music.

Berlin-based cellist Yibai Chen has attracted international attention for the depth and sensitivity of his music-making, alongside his technical command and compelling stage presence. His playing has been praised for its “flawless technique” and “sincere tenderness and sensitivity”, while violinist Daniel Hope has described him as “a tremendous talent”.

Since his breakthrough at the Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition in 2022, Chen has developed an international career, performing with leading orchestras and conductors around the world. In 2026, he was named a Classic FM Rising Star and selected as a BBC New Generation Artist, marking a new chapter for a young cellist making his mark on the international stage.

This concert is part of a trio of events bringing together BBC New Generation Artists with Yibai Chen also playing in the BBC New Generation Artists: Schubert Quintet concert with Opus13 on 1 May. The concert will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
