What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his disciples be? And how would today’s political and spiritual powers respond?
In The New Gospel, internationally renowned director Milo Rau brings these questions into the present day. Filmed in Matera, southern Italy, the setting for landmark Jesus films by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Mel Gibson, the documentary follows political activist Yvan Sagnet and a movement fighting for the rights of migrants facing exploitation and inhumane living conditions.
Rau and his collaborators return to the origins of the gospel, reimagining the Passion of Christ through the realities of contemporary Europe. Bringing together politics, theatre and cinema, The New Gospel asks urgent questions about faith, power, poverty and dignity and what solidarity might mean today.
