Micro-Ecologies as Institutions of the Future?

What can art actually change? And can artistic practice help us imagine new kinds of institutions for the future?

In this artist talk, internationally renowned theatre-maker Milo Rau explores these questions through the development of his own artistic practice and his aesthetics of ‘global realism’. Rau will trace a path from theatre and trial projects including The Moscow Trials, Orestes in Mosul, the Hamburg Trials and Godtribunals, to ‘symbolic institutions’ such as The Congo Tribunal and General Assembly: open spaces for gathering conflicting opinions and truths.

Moving through more recent projects including The Revolt of Dignity, A filmschool for Mosul and the Resistance Now Tour!, Rau will consider what he calls ‘alternative micro-ecologies’ – bringing art, civil society and politics together to explore different possibilities for social, political and institutional change.
