Mapping Languages
-
15 Feb 2027-19 Feb 2027Open DailySchwarzman Centre, OxfordWhite Box
Maps do more than just represent places: they reveal things about the people, power structures and ideas behind them.
This exhibition explores selected linguistic maps, their creators, and their audiences, from scarce and intriguing maps predating the nineteenth century, to the impressive linguistic atlases of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to digital mapping technologies transforming our understanding of languages today. What do we know about the creators of these maps, and their motivations? Who supported their work? Was there a political dimension? Who used the maps? What can they tell us today?
The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of talks, guided tours, and opportunities for visitors to help create linguistic maps.
