Oxford Ministry for the Future premieres visual artist Maija Tammi's artwork Care Fall on the 23-24 November.

A movie theatre version of the artwork that combines video and animation will be on view at the Schwarzman Centre. In the Care Fall's video a mysterious figure tries to thread across an old forestcarrying a precious vial without falling. A snake curls around a rod, a violin is played, and a rat interrupts a speech. Accounts of real accidents in high security laboratories are intercut into the surreal tale which walks the tightrope between despair and hope.

The accompanying animation continues the story beyond the Great Filter – the proposed explanation for the Fermi Paradox – which offers humanity two options: if we have passed through the Great Filter, we are likely to be very alone in the universe, if the Filter lies ahead, we are more likely to destroy ourselves than not. Together, the entire work takes as its focus the existential risk posed by biotechnology and asks: where are we going?

The artwork consists of a 20-minute video, 14-minute animation, two stories written by Joanna Kavenna and Juhani Karila, and two written interviews with Dr.Thomas Moynihan, specialized in history of ideas, and Dr. Filippa Lentzos, social scientist specialized in biosecurity.

Maija Tammi is Oxford Ministry for the Future's first visual artist in residence and she will create a new artwork for their event in 2027.
