Experience art and sound in a reflective exploration of time and sanctuary.

Explore an exhibition bringing together Edmund de Waal's installation another hour I-VI (2017) and Sanctuary, a specially created soundscape by Cities and Memory, as part of the Day of Psalms.

Inspired by the 'monastic hours' – a series of services held at regular intervals throughout the day – de Waal's reflective installation is accompanied by a tapestry of sounds exploring the idea of sanctuary.

Created specifically to complement de Waal's work in the Black Box, Sanctuary brings together twenty compositions by sound artists from nine countries, spanning more than five hours. Each explores the question: 'What does sanctuary mean to you?' Incorporating field recordings of places that represent sanctuary to each artist, the works take listeners on a journey from forests in Taiwan and monsoon rains in Tanzania to the skies of Antarctica and fields of Oxfordshire.

Together, the artists create a sound world that coexists with de Waal's installation, exploring sanctuary as more than a place of shelter. Echoing de Waal's consideration of memory, exile, belonging and protected spaces, the works invite us to reflect on our relationship with the world around us.

Visitors are welcome to drop in and out of the exhibition throughout the Day of Psalms, or explore it during the rest of the week (Tuesday 24 - Sunday 29 November, noon - 5pm).
