Marking the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, two of his most celebrated chamber works are heard through contrasting sound worlds, revealing how performances of his music have evolved across two centuries.

The ‘Archduke’ Trio is performed on period instruments, including a copy of a Graf fortepiano, while musicians from Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra bring the exuberant Septet to life on modern instruments. With its sublime slow movement, the ‘Archduke’ has been hailed as a supreme achievement for piano and strings; the Septet was described by American poet Walt Whitman as 'like nature laughing in the sunshine'.

The concert is the culmination of two days of talks and workshops, Sounding Beethoven: Now and Then, curated by Professor Laura Tunbridge and Sir Nicholas Kenyon, exploring how Beethoven’s music has been heard, understood and performed across two centuries.

Sounding Beethoven: Now and Then is part of of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s Beethoven Festival 2027
