    Sohmen Concert Hall

Before we open the new Sohmen Concert Hall to the public, we need to carry out an important stage of preparation - acoustic testing. To do this, we need staff volunteers to sit in the audience and help us understand how the hall sounds when full.

This is not a full concert, but you will hear live music as our musicians perform short pieces while acousticians measure and adjust the sound. There may be pauses, repeats, and explanations along the way, with a compere guiding you through the process. By attending, you’ll play a vital part in shaping how the hall will perform for audiences in the future.

Key information

  • Session runs 6.30pm–8.00pm (approx. 90 minutes)
  • There will be no interval
  • Seats are unreserved — staff will direct you on arrival
  • Invite only, please don't share this with your friends and family or wider contacts
  • Numbers are limited, so please book in advance
  • Latecomers will not be admitted

Once you have booked your ticket we will follow up with further details in early November.  If for any reason you are unable to attend, please let our Ticket Office know at the earliest opportunity via tickets@schwarzmancentre.ox.ac.uk.  It is important we don't have empty seats for this crucial test event.

Who you’ll hear

  • Harry Baker & Matthew McKinney (tenor and piano)
  • Principals of the Fantasia Orchestra (string quartet)
  • Fantasia Orchestra & Choir of Somerville, Oxford
  • Harry Baker Trio with special guest (tbc)

To make sure the testing is effective, please note

  • There will be a photography and social media blackout for this event.

  • Once the session has started, the audience will need to remain in the auditorium until it concludes.

  • To ensure accurate results, we kindly ask the audience to remain silent throughout the testing.
