Simon Ponsford

Countertenor

Simon Ponsford (countertenor) is a soloist and recitalist, and he sings with several international ensembles, most frequently with the Constellation Choir and The Sixteen. He has appeared as a soloist in venues including St John’s Smith Square, the Royal Festival Hall and Hong Kong City Hall. He is also a Lay Vicar in the choir of Westminster Abbey, and recently sang at the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III.

Simon started singing in Gloucester Cathedral Choir, before going on to be a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, while reading English Literature. From Cambridge, Simon spent five years singing at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, before moving to Westminster in 2013. Simon undertook a postgraduate MA at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with Michael Chance. 

Performance highlights include Monteverdi Choir’s memorised tour of Bach’s Matthäus-Passion, performing Handel’s Athalia in the Sheldonian Theatre with the Oxford Bach Choir, and making his international solo debut singing Handel’s Israel in Egypt with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Simon has also had a CD of Elizabethan songs released to critical acclaim on Nimbus Records.

Simon lives in Buckinghamshire with his wife Ali and his two small daughters, Molly and Hazel.
