Sarah Jones (& her many characters) are putting America on the therapy couch...

A bold and bitingly funny new take on the live experience and podcast from Tony Award-winning Sarah Jones.

Known for her ability to portray a wide range of characters across race, gender, age and class, Sarah conjures a cast of vivid voices from the last 250 years of American history. Each character confronts the challenges of politics, power and identity, helping us try to make sense of the America of today.

Part scripted, part improvised, and grounded in conversations between Sarah, her characters, and Oxford academics, the show mixes sharp satire and cultural critique as it tells the story of the moment we’re in, and how we got here.

Part of Unfinished Revolutions, a season tracing the living legacy of 1776.

"I want the whole world to know about Sarah Jones. I just think she's an extraordinary artist, a once in a lifetime artist." - Meryl Streep

Hear from Sarah Jones and National Black Theatre about the making process

"Inspired in part by America’s 250th anniversary, this process has been about creating a living conversation between Sarah Jones' personal lens on the country’s political history, ancestral memory, and collective imagination. In partnership with National Black Theatre, Foment Productions, and in conversation with Oxford Academics, we’ve approached America, Who Hurt You? as both artistic excavation and communal ritual — building a piece that invites people to see themselves reflected back in our nation’s many narratives. The making of this work has reminded us that theater can hold complexity, joy, and reckoning all at once. Our aim is for the audience to find not only transformative healing, but humor and hope in real time."
