What does it mean to be human in the age of intelligent machines?

This clay workshop series, conceptualised by visionary artist and designer and Bloomberg-Oxford Fellow Es Devlin, invites you to hand-build clay vessels in the beautiful setting of Wytham Woods, while engaging in conversations around the ethics of AI.

Developed in collaboration with Oxford Kilns, Oxford’s Internet Institute, and the Institute for Ethics in AI, and guided by Dr. Robin Green, this tactile, creative process allows you to participate in a collective act of making and talk in a welcoming, artist-designed space in nature.

The vessels developed in these workshops will form part of a choral installation created as part of the Schwarzman Centre’s Open House Weekend on 25 April 2026. For more information, please see Es Devlin and Nico Muhly: 360 Vessels — A Choral Installation.

Please note, clay work may involve fine particles; participants with respiratory sensitivities (e.g. asthma, COPD) may wish to wear a mask and those with skin conditions may wish to wear gloves. Sessions may involve sitting or standing for extended periods.

Discussions may touch on sensitive topics relating to the ethics of AI and participant conversations may be used as input for textual/video outputs. Consent will be clearly requested, but participants should be aware of this creative process.

Es Devlin will not be in attendance for all workshops.
