Burning Down The House - Alumni Talk

Join us prior to the performance of Burning Down the House for an alumni drinks reception and discussion with the academic team who have worked with Breach Theatre on the play: Professor Kirsten Shepherd, Professor of English and Theatre Studies at Oxford; Tzen Sam, DPhil Candidate, Faculty of English at Oxford; and Gaye Kynoch, Literary Translator.

Kirsten, Tzen and Gaye will discuss their research on the life and work of Laura Kieler, the real woman whose life events Ibsen used for his iconic feminist drama A Doll's House. Learn how Laura dealt with the shock of having her private life splashed on stage, how she wrote a play about the experience, and how audiences reacted to it - and how Ibsen in turn responded through his own work. Their conversation through their plays across two decades makes for a fascinating story that speaks to fundamental questions about art and appropriation, who gets to tell someone's story, and how you can turn research into theatre.

The event will begin at 6.15pm with a welcome drink followed by the talk. The event will finish at 7.15pm allowing you time to take your seat for the performance.
