Jason Hickel
Jason Hickel is a political economist, author and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is an ICREA Professor at the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology and the Department of Political Science and Public Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His research focuses on global inequality and ecological economics, with particular attention to the relationship between economic systems, human wellbeing and planetary limits.
Hickel is the author of The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions and Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World. In the latter, he challenges the assumption that continual economic growth is necessary for human prosperity, arguing instead for economies organised around wellbeing, equality and ecological sustainability.
His current research explores pathways towards radical climate mitigation, economic democracy and post-capitalist transition. His recent work considers what a post-growth economy could look like, including how societies might achieve high levels of human wellbeing while reducing pressures on the climate and natural world.
Hickel serves on a number of international research and policy bodies, including the Climate and Macroeconomics Roundtable of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Lancet Commission on Sustainable Health. He is a prominent voice in debates about degrowth, climate change and global justice, asking whether a fundamentally different economic model could provide a more equitable and sustainable basis for the future.
